Local vs Domain Admin Account

I am attempting to convert a physical machine to a virtual machine on an ESX server.  When I use the local admin account for the remote machine on the source login page, I get "connection to remote machine refused due to bad credentials".  When I use the domain admin account, it works.

  Do the physical machine that I convert have to be on a domain?
